Enderby Youth Band has a long and proud history dating back to the 1980’s. The band’s current Musical Director is Trevor Hounsome, who took over the leadership from Stewart Osgood in July 2004. Trevor’s work with the band has been recognised by Brass Band England at national level through the presentation of the “Brian Hicks Memorial Award” in 2017 for his commitment to youth brass bands.
Throughout Enderby Youth Band’s history, the emphasis has always been on achieving high musical standards….whilst having fun! The Youth Band has often been described as a “musical Youth Club”, and the social side is as important to our youngsters as the playing.
The band rehearses once a week, on a Sunday evening at the Enderby Village Institute. This time is used to play a range of pieces that feature in our regular concert programmes. The band also enters contests, both at a national and local level. We have a proud tradition of regularly featuring in the top four at these occasions. Please see our gallery of achievements for more detail on our success.
Over the years the band has also undertaken several concert tours to Cornwall, as well as regularly venturing abroad. Specific trips have included a visit to Brass Band Remiremont (France) at Easter 2010 after which we were delighted to host a return visit by the same band in August 2010, and again in 2018. The band has also enjoyed tours of the Rhineland in Germany (2012), Paris and Disneyland (2014), the Netherlands (including Amsterdam) in 2016 and Belgium in 2018, when we were honoured to play at the wreath laying ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres.
The band is proud of our role in the Community. In 2008, we were delighted to be awarded the Blaby District Council’s Award for Outstanding Achievement. The band regularly play for the Blaby District Council Carol Concert and throughout the year, besides our Contest work, we play at a host of community events. Typical events include:
• Formal concerts for local Churches / Village Halls
• Bandstand and Fete performances in the Summer
• Commemorative services or events such as the Radio Leicester Carol Service and the Enderby Remembrance Day Parade.
• Fundraising ensembles in shopping Centres – especially at Christmas
Enderby Youth Band is a special organisation. Many local brass bands have beginner groups – but very few bands in the country can offer the opportunity for these youngsters to go on and play to a high standard with a youth brass band of national standard.
Enderby Youth and Junior Bands have a long tradition of developing our young musicians to a high standard. Our players regularly progress on to study music at university, or Music College, and a significant number also become professional musicians in the Armed Services. Some of our past players are professional musicians, others play with Championship section bands around the country, and this of course includes our own senior band. Many other players have continued their playing with community bands throughout the country, and it is a source of satisfaction that our players can continue to benefit from their early opportunities in music throughout their lives.
We therefore truly believe that the training and the opportunities we offer are second to none. New members are always welcome. Complete beginners and recent starters can join our Junior Band, while more experienced players (Grade 2-3 upwards can go straight into our Youth Band). Whichever band you join, you will be guaranteed a high standard of tuition, along with plenty of fulfilment and fun.
We charge a monthly subscription of £10 per member. This enables us to cover the running costs of the band (tuition, music purchase, room hire), and where required we will provide our players with a good quality instrument to play whilst they remain as a band member.
Come along and give us a try!

Musical Director
Youth Band MD: Trevor Hounsome - B.Mus(Hons); LGSM; FVCM; ALCM
Trevor spent his formative years as a leading Cornet player with both Kettering Gold and Silver Band, and the Northamptonshire County Youth Brass Band. After studying Music at the University of Surrey, Trevor joined Enderby Band in 1984, and has spent most of his years with them as Principal Cornet. In the summer of 2004, Trevor was delighted to be appointed as the Musical Director of Enderby Youth Band. Trevor has worked hard to maintain the tradition of excellence that the Band had established, by creating an enjoyable but productive atmosphere in rehearsals.
In his “day” job, Trevor is also Head of Music at Nicholas Chamberlaine School in Bedworth, and a lead examiner of GCSE Music for the OCR examination board.
